If you buy wholesale goods that travel by road transport, you will hear about the LR number. Here is what it means and why you should keep it safe.
What is an LR?
LR stands for lorry receipt. It is the document a transport company issues to acknowledge that it has received your goods for delivery from one place to another. In everyday trade it is often called a bilty. Every consignment gets a unique LR number.
What does an LR contain?
- The sender (consignor) and receiver (consignee)
- A description of the goods and the number of packages
- The origin and destination
- Freight details
Why the LR matters
- Tracking: the LR number identifies your consignment with the transporter.
- Proof: it is the main document if goods are lost or damaged and a claim has to be made.
- Delivery check: you can match the packages you receive against the LR.
How to track your goods with the LR number
- Note the LR number and the name of the transport company from your supplier.
- Check the transporter’s website or tracking line, or call their local office, and give the LR number.
- Keep the LR copy until the goods have been checked and accepted.
What to check on delivery
- Count the packages and match them with the LR.
- Look for torn, wet or opened packages and note any damage on the receiving copy before you sign.
- Open and check the cartons soon after receiving; report problems to your supplier promptly.
LR number vs courier tracking number
Couriers usually give an AWB or tracking number; road transporters give an LR number. Both identify your consignment and serve the same purpose — tracking and proof.
