Cotton ek natural fibre hai — thanda aur aaramdayak. Poplin ek weave hai (cotton ya blend mein) — chikna aur crisp. Poly-cotton mein polyester mila hota hai — kam silwat, aasaan dekhbhaal. Garmi aur roz ke liye cotton, saaf-suthre look ke liye poplin, aur easy-care ke liye poly-cotton.
When you stock shirts for your shop, three fabrics cover most men’s and kids’ shirts in the wholesale market: cotton, poplin and poly-cotton. They are not three equal choices, though — poplin is a way of weaving, while cotton and poly-cotton describe the fibre. Knowing the difference helps you answer customers and choose your stock.
Cotton
Cotton is a natural fibre. Cotton shirts are breathable and soft, which is why they suit hot weather and everyday wear. The trade-off is that cotton creases more easily than blended fabrics. Plain cotton shirts in solid colours are a safe base for any shirt shop.
Poplin
Poplin is a plain weave with very fine ribs running across the fabric. It is usually made from cotton or a cotton blend. The result is a fabric that is smooth and crisp, lightweight but with body, and somewhat resistant to wrinkling. Poplin is widely used for men’s shirts because it holds its shape and takes a clean press.
- Cotton poplin keeps the breathability of cotton with a smoother, crisper finish.
- Polyester or blended poplin is easier to care for and resists wrinkles better, but is less breathable than cotton poplin.
Poly-cotton
Poly-cotton blends polyester with cotton. The polyester adds durability and wrinkle resistance and makes the shirt easier to maintain; the cotton keeps some softness. Poly-cotton shirts are a practical choice when customers want a shirt that needs little ironing.
Quick comparison
| Fabric | Feel | Creasing | Care | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Soft, breathable | Creases more | Needs ironing | Hot weather, everyday wear |
| Poplin | Smooth, crisp | Somewhat resistant | Holds a clean press | Neat casual and formal shirts |
| Poly-cotton | Slightly less breathable | Resists wrinkles | Easy care | Busy customers, daily wear |
Which should you stock?
- Start with plain cotton shirts in popular colours — they sell across seasons.
- Add poplin for customers who want a crisp, neat look.
- Add poly-cotton for easy-care demand.
- Always ask the supplier to name the fabric on every design. “Cotton” on a label can hide a blend.
